The Taipei Public Library is well patronised by book lovers and has a network of eleven branches and a group of professional storytellers to promote the enjoyment of reading to children. Between 500-900 children use the library facilities each week. The collection will also be available for activities to promote New Zealand's publishing sector.

In opening remarks, Michelle Slade, Director of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office, Taipei, expressed appreciation for the contribution by the fifteen New Zealand publishers who had provided books for the collection. She noted New Zealand writing had been described as "fresh and innovative, capturing the essence of a young land and its diverse peoples, with the richness of their different traditions." Children's books - including children's picture books and story books - were a genre in which New Zealand writers were particularly well recognised internationally.

During the special launch guests were enthralled by New Zealand actress Jennifer Ludlam's story reading. Shona Grundy, Executive Producer of Kangoo Animation delivered a specially prepared animation showcase; and well known New Zealand singer Whirimako Black, accompanied by jazz musician Lance Sua, shared a selection of her favourite songs in a 30-minute mini-concert. The afternoon concluded with a prize-giving ceremony for the six winners of the NZCIO essay writing competition and afternoon tea.

This event benefitted from the support provided by Dr Shu-Hsien Teng, Director of the Taipei Public Library, Mr Jan-chun Cherng, Director of Publication Affairs. GIO,Dr Linden Lin of Linking Publishing Company and Mr Jerome Su, Chair of Bookman Books and B.K. Norton.

Footnote. Contributing publishers: Mallinson Rendel, Huia, Gecko Press, Harper Collins, Reed, Raupo, Penguin, Hachette (previously Hodder Moa), Random House, MacMillan, Kangoo Animation, Heinmann, Pearson Education, Global Education Systems.
