Cooperation between the Council of Indigenous People and NZCIO

Wednesday, 24/12/08

CIP Chair, chang Jen-Hsiang with NZCIO Deputy Director Ngawini Keelan, Whirimako Black and Lance Sua At the invitation of the Council of Indigenous People (CIP), New Zealand singer Whirimako Black, accompanied by jazz guitarist Lance Sua, were special guests at a music and dance festival for youth on 22 November. The initiative, which was opened by CIP Chair, Chang Jen-Hsiang, saw more than one hundred and fifty students from around Taiwan take up the challenge to showcase their expertise in traditional as well as contemporary dance. The programme of music exchanges which featured two of Taiwan’s rising stars, Mr Wang Hon-Urn, and Ms Ipay Buyci, provided a stunning showcase of indigenous talent, particularly in the way in which traditional sounds were successfully interpreted for a contemporary setting. Whirimako’s set, which included her signature blend of indigenous inspired sounds from New Zealand layered with a jazz flavour, added a special dimension to the afternoon’s programme.

This collaboration brings to a close a busy year of activities which have included the March ‘DANCE AND SOUNDZ OF AUSTRONESIA’ concert in Taitung featuring New Zealand performing group ‘TE VAKA’, and a July creative writing and literature workshop led by well known New Zealand writer Witi Ihimaera.

Footnote: NZCIO and the Council of Indigenous People signed an arrangement to cooperate on indigenous issues on 8 May 2004.
